Time to Legalize Vacations

The Work to Live Campaign presented 50,000 petition signatures to labor advisors for Sen. Ted Kennedy and Congressman Henry Waxman in Washington D.C. The response was supportive to thousands of American workers for vacation protection.

Work to Live has joined with the Take Back Your Time campaign (www.timeday.org) to move forward with our legislative proposal. Take Back Your Time is a broad-based coalition of work-family groups and advocates who have put forward a Time to Care agenda to help us return to balance and real family values, part of which is Work to Live's minimum paid-leave law.

Take Back Your Time and Work to Live have launched a campaign to put minimum paid leave on the agenda of the '08 presidential candidates. It's an issue that has broad support across party lines, as workweeks climb to levels not seen since the 1920s and vacation time shrinks.

Let the candidates know this is an issue that could make a big difference in your life, in time with your family, time to enjoy the fruits of your labor, to travel, discover, learn, explore. It's what we work for, isn't it?

The current vacation system is obsolete, based on accrual, years at the job. In the volatile job market, people aren't going to be at a job long enough to get real vacation benefits. The average person entering the workforce today will have seven CAREERS, not jobs over their life. Only 14% of Americans take two weeks of vacation or more.

It's time to join the other 127 countries in the world that offer statutory validation for paid leave. This is a health issue, a quality of life issue and family values issue, and the candidates should be talking about it. If you'd like to help the campaign, go to timeday.org.
